I had an impromptu conversation with a friend today. We talked about her vivid dreams for a business that would use all of her creative abilities. She’s extremely talented, a hard worker and has a positive outlook on life. She had only one word to describe her current career…torture. I could feel it as she spoke it. Torture. I knew that she was not alone. So many men and women that I meet work day in and day out on a job that in their own words is torture. Why? The bills have to be paid. The family must be fed. The student loan is due. It’s true that the job pays the bills, so don’t quit your day job. Work by day and dream by night. Let your day job finance your business dream, your hobby, your heart. Don’t give up on yourself and the thing you were called to do.
It’s more than just a pipe dream. A pipe dream is some utterly ridiculous idea that doesn’t stand a chance or is not grounded in reality. My definition, not Webster’s. You’ve heard this many times. Pipe dreams are for people who want to escape their reality rather than change their reality. Pipe dreams and pipe dreamers are not at all what we mean when we talk about dreams. We think of dreams as an extension of reality. Dreams are what reality can become with the right knowledge, the right people, the right attitude, right life skills and the right timing. Dreams are more than just something we do to escape torture. They are the mental space reserved for our passion and purpose. They are the reason we were put on earth. They are the something that we are called to do while we are here. Most importantly, they are the things that feel more like fun and less like work. They bring the most fulfillment in our life. True dreams showcase our best self.
